Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus: Overview
Samsung has a knack for releasing a couple variations, every year, on their most recent of flagship phones and this is no exceptional case. The Galaxy S6 Edge had just burst onto the scene in April, and Samsung couldn’t wait to add a ‘+’ to it in August. The phone, as the name suggests, will bear a huge resemblance to the S6 Edge, therefore I will be covering just some of the changes that make the Edge+ stand out.
It starts out different from its predecessor, in the physical department, as the new device is bigger. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ has a screen size of 5.7 inches compared to the 5.1 of S6 Edge, has the same Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. and a very familiar Super AMOLED display. The resolution, however, remains the same at 2K which means the ppi is lower on the S6 Edge+ compared to the S6 Edge but it doesn’t make much of a difference since at a normal viewing distance, our eyes won’t be able to tell much of a difference.
The S6 Edge+ comes with Lollipop v5.1.1, out of the box and isn’t upgradable as of yet. It makes use of the same chipset in the Exynos 7420 with quite literally the same set of processors and graphics. The Edge+ does add another gigabyte of RAM to the 3GB of the S6 Edge.
The camera remains the same as well which takes pictures at 16 megapixels and has an aperture of f/1.9 for some great low-light performance. It also provides Optical Image Stabilization for keeping your pictures as stable as possible. The video recording is very standard, compared to the recent flagship phones from all the smartphone manufacturers, recording at 4K, 1080p and 720p resolutions with a slow-motion of up to 120 frames per second.
The front camera is also the same using a 5 megapixels sensor with an aperture of f/1.9, keeping your faces lit even in low-light environments. It also records videos at 2K resolution of up to 30 frames per second.
Overall, there isn’t much of an improvement over its predecessor in terms of specifications and such, other than the fact that the RAM has been given an extra 1GB, compared to the S6 Edge. But it’s more of a phablet than just a phone as it targets the same market as the iPhone 6 Plus which is probably why Samsung decided to release another S6 Edge, in the first place, with a ‘+’ as well.
