iPhone 16 Plus: What to Expect in the Plus model of 2024?

With everyone talking about the 2024 iPhone 16 phones, there are a lot of rumours and leaks that have hit the internet in recent weeks.

Thanks to loads of speculations that have surfaced, Apple fans have started to align their expectations for the array of features and applications in the new iPhones. 

Let’s dig into the details that are known as of now about the iPhone 16 Plus.

Display

The Apple expert and display specialist Ross Young made some interesting remarks about the display of this year’s Plus phone. He suggests that Apple might be bringing a new display size somewhere between the Pro and Pro Max variants in the iPhone 17 series. That means we might not see a surprise in terms of the screen size this year.

The new rumour hinted about how the new Plus model might sit among other members of the iPhone 16 family. This year might welcome more efficient displays in the standard and Plus models. That is expected to bring along regular processor design improvements and updated software features. 

Battery

A recent leak on social media suggests that the iPhone 16 Plus could get a smaller battery than the predecessor. The Plus phone, with a 6.7-inch display, is expected to be available with a 9% smaller battery. This phone is released as the entry-level device for the Pro models.

The battery for the standard model, however, is believed to see a rise in capacity of as much as 6%. 

The iPhone 16 Plus battery capacity is believed to be 4006 mAh which will be 8.6% smaller than the 4383 mAh power of iPhone 15 Plus. That is something experts are not feeling comfortable with. 

Thanks to the enormous stamina the phone brought, the iPhone 15 Plus was considered to have one of the best battery lives on the market. A reduction in the power could scrap away a key attraction for the iPhone fans – something no one would ever want.  

Colours

Regarding colours, a rumour suggests that the new Plus model will come in seven colours, unlike the five colours of the iPhone 15 Plus released a year earlier; blue, pink, yellow, green, black, white and purple. No one from the company responded to that, yet.

One thing experts are very certain about is that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max variants will be narrower and taller than their respective predecessors. Some information sources claimed they would have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes respectively. 

This new information suggests that you should expect the Plus model to have a screen between 6.4 inches and 6.8 inches. 

Young hasn’t said anything about why Apple would strip down the battery capacity which Apple consumers and experts loved the longer-lasting battery of the iPhone 15 Plus a year earlier. One possibility might be the company’s drive to broaden the separation lines between the Plus and its Pro models.

With the iPhone 16 Pro Max boasting a larger 6.9-inch screen, Apple might see the 6.7-inch display to be too close to that.

With that in perspective, the 6.5 inches would be a perfect middle shot and would give fans a decent fourth screen size option to choose from. 

In the past, Apple didn’t have much success with smaller displays. The 5.4-inch iPhone 13 Mini was the last Mini phone before Apple started offering Plus models in an effort to attract big-screen lovers. The first phone with a larger screen was the iPhone 14 Plus.

The new screen size will ensure the Plus phone offers a bigger display to the users than the standard model. The 6.5-inch is not a small size but it’s just a little smaller than the Pro Max’s 6.9-inch screen.

So, the move to incorporate a 6.5-inch display is a sensible move that will not repel the iPhone fans. While the iPhone 15 Plus was admired as the best battery life phone, it still lacked its own identity – the phone looked exactly the same as the standard iPhone models. By giving a new exclusive screen size to the new iPhone 16 Plus phone, Apple is trying to give a reason to the Apple fans to cherish.

Will Apple try to kill the Plus model?

There is another angle to all this discussion. As a corporate entity, Apple would definitely want to sell more of its pricier iPhones in the new series. That means it will encourage the fans to go after its more pricier Pro models than the cheaper ones. With a fourth screen option in hand, it will make users believe that they should grab the biggest phone – Pro Max model in this case – blindly believing that the biggest means better.

Wondering why is that? Well, the current iPhone 15 Plus phone is the same size as the iPhone 15 Pro Max. To make the Max model more appealing, the simple move would be to reduce the screen of the Plus model so that people would spend more on the biggest-screen Pro Max model.
